The Privilege of Helping

As we head into the holiday season, it is so easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle. We are supposed to be thankful, giving, and soak up time with loved ones, but often the stress of travel, gifts, big meals, and forced family obligations can cloud the joy of the merriment. So, before the chaos begins, I have taken time to really reflect on what I would like this holiday season to look like for our family.

I want it to be less about material items and more about quality time, fun experiences, and lending a helping hand-with extra emphasis on helping where we can. Life has felt especially hard this year-food prices are rising, housing costs remain high, and lots of people have lost jobs due to staffing reductions. And that does not include those who are facing health challenges. As someone who has experienced health issues and difficult life events simultaneously, I know the weight of carrying both.

While I still have health issues and residual side effects from years of chemotherapy, they are manageable now. This leaves my family and me in a position to assist others-and that, in itself, feels like a huge privilege. Whether it is volunteering our time, making financial donations, or providing goods, I feel like we can make a difference. Being in a position to do those things is an honor that we do not take for granted. Not everyone has their health or financial stability.

The idea of helping others reminds me of a theme from The Artfelt Brush podcast-dedication. Dedication is not just about perseverance during the creative process; it’s also about showing up for something bigger than yourself. Whether it is dedicating your time to a cause, your energy to someone in need, or your heart to your creative work, it is all an act of giving.

The act of giving does not have to be extravagant or large. You might have limited time or funds, but even a little bit goes a long way. Everyone giving a little, creates a huge impact. So, let’s dedicate this holiday season to connection-to helping, to creating, and to appreciating the privilege of being able to do both.

“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.” ~Oscar Wilde
